The airport Foula ( IATA code : FOA ) is an airport on the remote island of Foula in Shetland , in the north of Scotland .
history
The runway opened in the 1970s and is operated by the Foula Airstrip Trust . There is also a ferry service to Foula that runs three times a week, but it is claimed that tourists prefer the short flight of the 135-minute ferry crossing. The flights are also used to transport essentials such as medicines to the island, which has 38 residents.
The airfield also has the island's only public toilet and telephone.
Airlines and destinations
At the airfield, Directflight operates the flights from Tingwall under a PSO (Public Service Obligation) , financed by the Shetland Islands Council . A Britten-Norman Islander flies to the airport four times a week, with a flight time of 15 minutes. Flights are highly dependent on the weather, due to fog and cross winds.
