Tiree Airport ( IATA code : TRE , ICAO code : EGPU ) is located on the Hebridean island of Tiree in the Council Area Argyll and Bute off the west coast of Scotland . The operator and owner is Highlands and Islands Airports Limited .

The airport is the former Royal Air Force Station Tiree . The area was confiscated in 1940 and in April 1942 the base was put into operation. In the spring of 1944, the 518th Squadron was stationed here. Her job was to investigate the weather far out on the Atlantic, for which she used specially equipped Halifax bombers. The squadron's weather data also served to determine a suitable start for Operation Overlord and were therefore crucial for the successful Allied invasion of Normandy.

The airport was transferred to the Ministry of Civil Aviation in 1947. Nowadays it has scheduled flights to Coll , Oban and Glasgow .
