Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIA) is a Scottish state company based at Inverness Airport . It operates several airports in the northernmost part of the United Kingdom .

history

The company was founded on March 4, 1986 in Edinburgh with the aim of organizing the airports previously operated by the British state under private law . Initially owned by the British Civil Aviation Authority , it passed into the hands of the Scottish regional government in two steps from 1995 as part of the devolution process . This subsidizes the operation based on the provisions of the Civil Aviation Act of 1982, most recently in the 2014/15 financial year with around 34 million pounds . In the 2015/16 financial year, a total of 1,437,625 passengers were handled at the Group's eleven airports, 6000 more than in the previous year.

structure

Organizationally, the HIA is one of three subsidiaries of the Highlands and Islands Airports Limited Group (HIAL), which also includes Dundee Airport Limited as the operator of Dundee Airport (since 2007) and Airport Managed Services Limited (AMSL). The latter is responsible for security services at the group's eleven airports.

The airports are mainly regional airports , located in the Highlands and on the offshore islands. The most important airport is Inverness, which handles around half of the group's total passenger volume.
