The airfield Broadford ( IATA code : SKL ; ICAO code : EGEi ; officially Isle of Skye (Broadford) Airfield , also known as Ashaig Airstrip or Broadford Aerodrome ) is a small airfield on the Hebridean island of Skye in the Council area Highland off the west coast Scotland , with a single runway. It is located next to the hamlet of Ashaig , near the village of Broadford . The operator and owner is the Highland Council .

history

The airfield was built by the Corps of Royal Engineers and opened in 1972 to serve as the gateway to the Isle of Skye. Loganair operated a scheduled flight from the airport to Glasgow from 1972 to 1988 .

Since then there have been no commercial flights and the airfield is mostly deserted. The airfield is occasionally used by NHS Highland and the Scottish Ambulance Service for transferring patients to hospitals in Inverness or Glasgow.

In 1980 the airfield was used as the location for the opening scene of Flash Gordon .

In the last few years the airfield was used for the storage of large wind turbines. It is also used for beach sailing activities.

Music festival

Between 2005 and 2007 the airfield hosted the Isle of Skye Music Festival .

In March 2012 the Celtic Connections Big Top was held, part of the Glasgow Celtic Connections Festival . Artists who participated in this two-day event included a. Rosanne Cash , The Civil Wars , Raul Malo, Mànran and Niteworks. This was the first time Celtic Connections had held an event outside of Glasgow.
