The airfield Flotta ( IATA code : FLH ) is located on the island of Flotta in Orkney , Scotland . The airfield has a terminal building and a helipad , which are on the east side of the north end of the runway.
history
The airfield belonged to the Talisman Oil Company, which also built the airfield. The first landing on Flotta took place on May 28, 1976 with a Britten-Norman Islander (G-AWNR) from Loganair . The first scheduled flight to Flotta was flown by another Loganair Britten-Norman Islander (G-AXVR) on March 1, 1977 via Hoy Island Airport . The crew changes at the Occidental Petroleum Oil Terminal were carried out with a British Airways HS748 . The scheduled flights from Loganair to Flotta were discontinued in 1981, as a direct result of the oil company's free ferry services. However, the airfield was not closed.
Ownership of the airfield passed to Elf Exploration UK plc in 2001 . In the same year the runways were renumbered from 15/37 to 16/34. Today the airfield is mainly used by rescue workers.
