history

The school was founded in 1856 as a private school with Protestant tradition in the house of Antonie Dietrich, wife of the music director Dietrich. In 1898 the private school was converted into a foundation called the Evangelical Higher School for Private Girls . On the 50th anniversary in 1906 the school was allowed to name itself after Cecilie zu Mecklenburg-Schwerin the Cecilienschule. The conversion from a private to a public school took place between 1912 and 1914. Due to the war, the school was closed in the spring of 1945, and lessons were resumed in autumn 1945. In 1965 the school was relocated to a newly constructed building on Oelmühlenstrasse. The Ceciliengymnasium has been accepting boys since 1973.
