The Siegfriedplatz is a central place and a venue in the city of Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia . Siegfriedplatz is also a statistical district in Bielefeld.

General

The almost triangular square is located in the west of the Mitte district between Siegfriedstrasse and Weststrasse. It is about 5400 m². The location is characterized by the proximity to the university , in particular by the connection by the tram , the Bürgerpark and the SchücoArena . The city center is also relatively close. As in most of the western city center, the development dates from around 1900. As a result of these factors, the area around Siegfriedplatz has developed into a quarter with the highest square meter and rental prices in Bielefeld (as of 2013). The house on Weststraße 66 (built in 1914) and the former civil guard are included in the list of Bielefeld monuments .

Former vigilante guard

The dominant structure is the civil guard built in 1913-14. Here - supplemented by "one of the most beautiful toilets in town" - the calibration office, a post office and a police station, which was closed in 1977, were located. The building could be preserved thanks to the city's funds and the citizens' initiative Bürgerwache. Since then, it has served as an event room, editorial location for the district magazine Viertel and a gastronomic location. When the weather is appropriate, the area in front of the civil guard is used for outdoor catering. The events of the Kulturwache, a year-round cultural program, take place in the building itself. In 1994 the city administration withdrew from the financing. Since then, the citizens' initiative has operated the vigilante guard alone.

Events and city life

Flea markets, a regular weekly market and a Christmas market take place regularly on Siegfriedplatz. The summer use as a "sunbathing lawn" is also worth mentioning. The Supertram, a catering establishment with a bar in an old tram, is also located there.

Connection

Siegfriedplatz can be reached with the city bus line 27 and line 4 of the city railway .

The statistical district Siegfriedplatz

The district covers a large part of the western inner city, also known as Weststadt or Bielefelder West . These include relatively homogeneous Wilhelminian style streets such as Bismarckstrasse, Siegfriedplatz, the Bürgerpark and the Schüco Arena . In 2014 the district had 10,435 inhabitants.
