The Hermannslauf is a fun run that takes place regularly on the last Sunday in April of each year and runs over 31.1 kilometers from the Hermannsdenkmal near Detmold to the Bielefeld Sparrenburg . Individual athletes have already run the Hermannslauf twice with 62.2 km and three times with 93.3 km as an ultramarathon .

The fun run, which was held for the first time in 1972, is organized by the TSVE Bielefeld . In the early years, the Hermannslauf was run by the Bielefelder Ski Club e. V. aligned. More than 7,000 runners, walkers and hikers now take part, making the Hermannslauf one of the larger running events in Germany.

The Panzerstraße in the area of the military training area , the Tönsberg , downtown Oerlinghausen as well as the Lämershagener stairs and the Eiserne Anton in the Bielefeld district of Stieghorst are special crowd pullers .

history

Wolfgang Schlüter and Peter Gehrmann launched the Hermannslauf in 1971.

route

The running route, which partly runs along the Hermannsweg, runs mainly on forest floor and sandy paths, but also on concrete, asphalt and cobblestones . The total length has been 31.1 kilometers since 2005. Up to and including 2004, the route was 30.6 km long. Due to the large number of spectators in the city center of Oerlinghausen, the organizers have extended it by 500 meters. The widespread view that in the early years of the Hermannslauf the route length was 35 km is wrong. The designation "35 km Hermannslauf" goes back to the rounding of popular run distances in 5-kilometer steps, which was customary at the time. The route from 1972 to 1976 ran over 30.4 kilometers on the actual Hermannsweg and in 1977 the first 13 kilometers were moved to a parallel route in order to avoid crossing the main road between Augustdorf and Pivitsheide and to use an armored bridge instead.

Route

The bus transfer from downtown Bielefeld to the Hermannsdenkmal

The registration center for the run is in downtown Bielefeld. From there there is a bus transfer to the start at the Hermannsdenkmal. Around 120 buses from all over East Westphalia are in use for this purpose.

After starting at the Hermannsdenkmal (371 m), the route leads after the connecting road to the military training area and crossing the Allhornberg / Großer Ehberg saddle (km 7.0; 299 m) to Augustdorfer Panzerstraße (km 8.5; 1st refreshment point). After the Stapelager Gorge (km 13.3; 2nd food), after crossing the Tönsberg (km 16.0; 333 m) through Oerlinghausen (km 17.8; 3rd food) into the Schopketal (176 m). After the wall path in Lämershagen and the motorway bridge (km 22.40; 227 m) follows the notorious stairs of Lämershagen: around 45 meters in altitude, spread over 120 steps, have to be negotiated uphill. The route continues uphill to Eiserner Anton (km 24.42; 309 m; 4th catering). From here, the first section climbs again in gentle waves over Osningstraße and Habichtshöhe (km 27.90; 217 m) to Brand's Busch (km 27.90; 196 m; start of the promenade) and down to Sparrenburg (165 m). At the finish, each participant receives a medal with a motif of the running route.

Route profile

The run leads through challenging, very hilly terrain, on which the meters in altitude covered add up to a total of around 515 meters and 710 meters downhill. In absolute terms it goes downhill, as the Hermannsdenkmal is a good 200 meters higher than the Sparrenburg.
