The Bahnhofstrasse in Bielefeld is the North Western part of the central shopping street East Westphalia city. It forms the central axis of the Neustädter shopping mile, which, separated by Jahnplatz , is followed by the Altstädter Niedernstrasse and Obernstrasse.

Building structure and history

In addition to the historic central station at the north end, Bahnhofstrasse is largely characterized by commercial buildings that have been built since the early days of the city when the street was laid out. It connected the train station, which was laid out in 1847, with what was then the city area, historically located south of today's Jahnplatz, today's old town . Trams operated here until 1956/57 , after which the road was still open to car traffic. At the end of the 1950s, the conversion of the southern section between Feilenstrasse and Jahnplatz into a pedestrian zone began , with numerous typical chain stores and the Karstadt , Quelle and Kaufhalle department stores dominating the scene. Two former large cinemas, each with 1,000 seats, were also part of it - the Universum (corner of Zimmerstrasse, 1928–1968) and the Capitol (1936 to 1970s), Bahnhofstrasse 4. The facade of the Capitol, which is typical of the time, has been partially preserved at the Zara fashion house to this day. In the northern section it is the connection between Feilenstraße and the main train station for all modes of transport except for the light rail .
