United National Convention

The United National Convention ( UNC ) was a political party in Ghana founded during the Third Republic of Ghana between 1979 and 1981.

This party was founded by the military dictatorship under Ignatius Kutu Acheampong .

Election results

In the presidential election ( National Assembly ) on June 18, 1979, William Ofori-Atta , one of Ghana's Big Six , ran as a direct candidate for the UNC and won 17.4 percent of the vote (311,265 votes in total). The party won 13 of the then 140 seats in the National Assembly. In these elections, the UNC followed the political tradition of former Prime Ministers Kofi Abrefa Busia and Joseph Boakye Danquah and resembled the Popular Front Party (PFP) in terms of its political orientation .

After the 1979 elections, the People's National Party (PNP), which emerged from the elections as the strongest force, and the UNC formed a government coalition. In October 1980 the UNC left the coalition and joined the All People's Party , an amalgamation of several parties.
