The ACP took part in the elections on June 18, 1979 and won ten of the 140 seats in the National Assembley . On the same day the direct elections for the office of president were held. Frank Bernasko ran as the ACP's presidential candidate and received 9.4 percent of the vote. The ACP candidate was clearly defeated by the later participants in the runoff elections Hilla Limann from the People's National Party and Victor Owusu from the Popular Front Party . The ACP mainly found support from members of the Fanti ethnic group , the second largest Akan group.

With the military coup by Jerry Rawlings on December 31, 1981, all parties were again banned and the ACP dissolved.
