from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gold Coast Legislative Council elections were held in 1946 in the British Crown Colony of Gold Coast . At the beginning of the same year, amendments to the constitution had made the Gold Coast Colony the first colony in Africa with a majority of African members; 21 of the 32 members of the body were black, including all 18 elected members. On July 23, 1946, the Legislative Council met for the first time.

background

A new constitution for the colony was promulgated by order on March 29, 1946. The new Legislative Council should have 18 elected and 14 appointed members. In addition, for the first time he was to be responsible for overseeing the administration of the Ashanti region, which was previously not part of the crown colony and was ruled directly by the respective governor of the Gold Coast. Four members were to be elected in urban areas and the remainder by provincial councils in the provinces.

The new constitution required elections to be held within three months of its promulgation and an initial meeting of the newly elected Legislative Council within four months.
