General election in Ghana 2012
The parliamentary elections in Ghana 2012 took place on December 7, 2012, parallel to the 2012 presidential elections . The elections confirmed Ghana's quasi-two-party system with the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress , which together received well over 90% of the vote. The New Patriotic Party, whose candidate Nana Akufo-Addo was unexpectedly clearly defeated in the parallel presidential elections, was able to gain a lead of 1% over the competing National Democratic Congress in the general election. Besides the two major parties, only the People's National Convention won a seat in the parliament of Ghana . In addition, three independent candidates made it into parliament.
Voter registration and voting districts
For the first time a biometric system of voter registration was used in which registered voters were identified by their fingerprints. Due to technical problems with the biometric system and a lack of voting documents in some polling stations, the election commission extended the elections by one day. Compared to the parliamentary elections in 2008 , the number of electoral districts has increased significantly from 230 to 275. The parliamentary seats are determined by majority voting, in which one direct candidate per constituency is elected for a seat in parliament.
