Isépy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Isépy family (lat. Gens de [Magyar-] Isép ; dt. Von Isép) is one of the oldest still existing noble families in Hungary . Its ancestral home was the village of Magyarizsép (today Slovakia ; Slovak: Nižný Žipov).

Surname

The name appears in different forms: Izsépy, Isipi, Isepi. The official variant "Isépy" is the archaic form of the phonetically correct "Izsépy". The respective suffix (-y / -i) denotes the local affiliation in Hungarian (cf. in German “von” / “aus” or the suffix “-er” attached to place names; e.g. Berlin-er). Etymologically , the name is derived from the Greek Εὐσέβειος or the Latin form Eusebius , which found its way into Hungarian as Özséb, or the name Josef (József).

history

The Isépy come from the Bogát-Radvány clan, from which they emerged together with the Cseleji, Monoky and Rákóczy at the end of the 13th century. The clan split into six families: the Cseleji, the Monoky, the Rákóczy and three Isépy branches. With the exception of one branch of the Isépy, to which the members of the family living today can be traced back, all the others died out sooner or later. The ancestor of this branch was Sztáncs von Isép, first mentioned in 1252.
