Aurelian Reomensis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aurelianus Reomensis (Aurelian von Réôme) was a Frankish writer and music theorist who worked in the middle of the 9th century. He is the author of the Musica Disciplina , the first major treatise on music from medieval Europe.

Life

Virtually nothing is known about the life of Aurelian that can be deduced from the treatise itself. For a while he belonged to the monastery in St. Jean de Réôme on the Côte-d'Or near the present-day town of Moutiers-Saint-Jean. Aurelian only states in his text that he was a former monk from Réôme, but had been dismissed from the community for a criminal offense ("abiectus"). He wrote the treatise as a form of penance, both at the request of his colleagues who needed his expertise, but also as an attempt to please his teacher Abbot Bernard of St. Jean de Réôme, to whom he dedicated his work. It is not known whether Aurelian was accepted back into the monastery on the basis of his tract. There is a record of an abbot named Bernard in St. Jean de Réôme who began in 846 and soon after became Bishop of Autun . This contributed to the dating of the treatise "to the year 849 or the beginning of the year 850".

Act

According to its own statements, the Musica Disciplina primarily compiles works of music theory from antiquity and continues to supplement them with knowledge that the author had acquired from his masters. In particular, the older musical treatise Musica Albini was almost completely cited in Chapter 8. This text [O] CTO TONOS IN MUSICA also comes from Carolingian times, but compared to the Musica disciplina it is a very short treatise on the eight modes.
