Musica Disciplina

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Musica Disciplina is a music theory text that was written around 850 by Aurelian Reomensis . Together with the older Musica Albini ( de octo tonis ) it is one of the first early medieval writings on music.

content

The dedication of the work to Abbot Bernhardus von Réome allows conclusions to be drawn about the “dating to the year 849 or the beginning of the year 850”. The author explains that this document summarizes (ancient) writings or reports on content that he learned directly from his teachers. In fact, the first seven chapters in particular more or less precisely quote texts by Boethius , Cassiodorus and Isidore of Seville . The work is also significant because of the early transmission of neumes . In the eighth chapter, which is composed of three sources, the obviously older text de octo tonis is quoted, which has been passed on in numerous other sources and corresponds almost literally to them. Afterwards, from the 9th chapter onwards, Aurelian expresses himself in great detail about the early medieval keys. The text edition by Lawrence Gushee is mainly based on an early source from the end of the 9th century from Valenciennes .
