Border between Austria and Slovakia
The border between Austria and Slovakia is 106.7 kilometers long.
course
The border begins in the north at the confluence of the Thaya and the March (Slovak Morava ) at the border triangle Austria-Slovakia-Czech Republic and then follows the lower reaches of the March to its confluence with the Danube at Engelhartstetten / Devín . The border then runs along the river before it turns south in the area between Wolfsthal , Karlova Ves and Petržalka and reaches the border triangle Austria-Slovakia-Hungary near Deutsch Jahrndorf / Čunovo .
history
Today's border was created on the basis of the Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919 between Austria and Czechoslovakia, although large parts of the border between the two halves of Austria-Hungary formed part of the border and the March section formed the Kingdom of Hungary since the 11th century separated from Austria.
During the Cold War , the Iron Curtain ran along the border and was accordingly closely guarded.
The current border course is regulated according to a border treaty between Austria and Czechoslovakia of December 21, 1973 with later changes.
