Border between Slovenia and Hungary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The border between Croatia and Hungary separates the territory of Slovenia from that of Hungary . Its length is given as 102 km. The border includes the Prekmurje in Slovenia, which was Hungarian until 1920 and , unlike the rest of Slovenia, had previously belonged to the Transleithan half of the empire.

The common national border begins at the border triangle (387 m) east of Minihof-Liebau (Slovene Suhi Mlin, Hungarian Liba) in the Austrian Burgenland and continues the Burgenland-Slovene border to the east. It leaves the predominantly Slovene-speaking Felsőszölnök (German Oberzemming, Slovene Gornji Senik) on the Hungarian side and the hill country of Goričko on the Slovene side. At Hodoš (Hungarian: Őrihodos, German: Hodosch) it crosses the railway line from Murska Sobota , the historic capital of Prekmurje , the Slovenian Übermur region, to Zalaegerszeg . There, the border also crosses the Velika Krka river , which continues as Kerka on the Hungarian side. The border continues in a generally southerly direction and crosses the Mala Krka east of the Slovenian Domanjsevici (Hungarian: Domonkosfa). It continues to the south-east and follows the low ridge between the valley of the Kobiljiski potok on the Slovenian side and the Szentgyörgyvölgyi patak on the Hungarian side. East of the Slovenian Kobilje (Hungarian Kebeleszentmárton, German: Kebell) it crosses the Kobiljiski potok (in the further course in Hungary Kebele-patak), leaves Bödeháza and Gáborjánháza on the Hungarian side as well as Genterovci on the Slovenian and leads north on the Slovenian Lendava (Hungarian: Lendva) over. East of Pince it crosses the European route 653 , which is formed in Slovenia by the Avtocesta A5 and in Hungary by the Autópálya M70 and crosses the border a little further east. A little to the south, the border reaches the Ledava river (Hungarian Lendva, German Limbach), which it follows until it flows into the Mur . However, the exact course of the border in this easternmost area is disputed (see border between Croatia and Hungary ).

Changes in the Hungarian border in the 20th century

The current border goes back to the time around 1920, when Hungary, in addition to the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia , had to cede various Slavic populated areas in the south of central Hungary, including the Međimurje and Prekmurje counties, to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in the Peace of Trianon . The area was annexed by Hungary in 1941. After the Second World War , the border from 1920 was restored and remained unchanged even after the dissolution of Yugoslavia. It is an EU internal border . In the refugee crisis in Europe from 2015 onwards , Hungary set up border fortifications on its southern border from June 2015 .
