Wu'er Kaixi (born February 17, 1968 in Beijing , People's Republic of China ) is a Uyghur and was known as the student leader in the Tian'anmen massacre in 1989 .

Life

Wu'er Kaixi studied at the Beijing Pedagogical University and was one of the leaders of the student movement in Tiananmen Square . In China he became known nationwide because of a meeting of student representatives with then Prime Minister Li Peng, which was broadcast directly on state television . Wu'er Kaixi, who had been on a hunger strike for days and was sitting across from Li Peng in pajamas, contradicted him several times without showing any respect.

After the bloody suppression of the student protests by units of the People's Liberation Army on June 4, 1989, Wu'er Kaixi was on the wanted list of the security authorities. Three weeks later he was able to flee to the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong by boat. He came to the USA via France and finished his university studies there.

In 1996 Wu'er Kaixi went into exile in Taiwan . In Taipei he worked as a political commentator, investment banker, filmmaker and lecturer. In 2015 he ran as an independent member of the Taiwanese parliament.
