Pavlo Schytezkyj

Pavlo Hnatowytsch Schytezkyj (born March 23, jul. / 4. April  1837 greg. In Kremenchuk , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire , † March 5 jul. / 18th March  1911 greg. In Kiev , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian philologist, linguist, lexicographer, ethnographer, educator and a public figure.

Life

Pavlo Schytezkyj studied between 1851 and 1857 at the Theological Seminary in Pereyaslaw , from 1857 to 1860 at the Kiev Theological Academy and then he studied until 1864 at the Historical and Philological Academy of St. Vladimir University .

After completing his studies, he taught Russian at the boys' high school in Kamjanez-Podilskyj between 1864 and 1868 . After that he became a teacher at various Kiev high schools. From 1874 to 1880 and from 1882 to 1893 he taught at the colleague of Pavlo Galagan , a private boys' grammar school in Kiev founded a few years earlier by Hryhorij Galagan . Between 1880 and 1882 he interrupted his teaching activities at the colleague in favor of a teaching position as an assistant professor at the University of St. Petersburg . He also taught at the St. Vladimir Cadet School in Kiev between 1882 and 1893.

During a class, he suffered a stroke that paralyzed the right side of his body. After intensive treatment he was able to walk with a stick again, began to write with his left hand and devoted himself extensively to his research in his house on the Andreassteig . In May 1909 he suffered a second stroke and has been bedridden ever since, unable to see or speak. On the evening of March 18, 1911, he died at the age of 74. His funeral took place on March 20 at the Kiev Baikowe Cemetery , where Olena Ptschilka gave the funeral speech.

Pavlo Schytezkyj was one of the founders of Ukrainian linguistics and dealt intensively with the history of the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian literature and folklore. He received several scientific awards, including the Uvarov Prize in 1877 and 1890 ( Уваровская премия ). In 1908 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Kiev.
