Hryhorij Pawlowytsch Galagan (born August 3 jul. / 15. August  1819 greg. In Sokyrynzi , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire , † September 13 jul. / 25. September  1888 greg. ) Was a Ukrainian social activist, ethnographer , philanthropist and Patrons and large landowners .

Life

Hryhorij Galagan was born as a member of the Ukrainian noble family Galagan in Sokyrynzi in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast Chernihiv , where the family owned a castle. As a large landowner, he owned lands in the governorates of Poltava and Chernigov . He also held many public offices in which he campaigned for reforms such as the abolition of serfdom. In 1883 he was appointed a member of the State Council.

In his birthplace he founded and subsidized the first agricultural savings and loan cooperative in Ukraine. In 1871, in memory of his only son Pavlo, who died in 1869 at the age of 16, he founded the Galagan College ( Колегія Павла Ґалаґана / Kolehija Pawla Galagana ) in Kiev , which lasted until the October Revolution . In what is now Pryluky Rajon he was the initiator and supporter of elementary schools and, in 1874, of the high school in Pryluky .

As a patron of the arts, he promoted choir singing and the theater, had buildings built in the traditional Ukrainian style and acquired works of art, among others by Taras Shevchenko . With this he used as well as with Mychajlo Maxymowytsch , Pantelejmon Kulisch , Volodymyr Antonowytsch and many members of the Hromada of Kiev.

From 1873 to 1875 he was president of the southwest branch of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society . He died at the age of 69 in his birthplace and was buried there.
