Walentyn Arsentijowytsch Shurskyj (born February 9, 1927 in Kotovsk , Moldovan ASSR , Ukrainian SSR ; † October 24, 2014 in Kiev ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet scientist, politician and from 1979 to 1990 chairman of the board of the Kiev City Council of People's Deputies, the then name of the Kiev mayor.
Life
Walentyn Shurskyj studied electrical engineering at the National Technical University of Ukraine "KPI" until 1954 and worked from 1961 as chief engineer and from December 1969 to 1979 as director at the Kiev armaments factory "Radiopribor" ( Радіоприлад ).
From 1946 to 1990 he was a member of the KPU and from 1979 to 1989 he was a member of the Nationalities Soviet of the USSR . Between November 1, 1979 and January 17, 1990 he was the chairman of the Kiev City Council of People's Deputies and during this time also President of the Council of Heads of the Capitals of the Union Republics, Moscow and Leningrad.
He was also a board member of the Dynamo Kiev football club .
In the scientific field, the doctor of economics, author of 5 monographs and over 100 publications, as well as patent holder of 13 inventions. Since 1993 he has been a member of the Academy of Environmental Sciences of Ukraine.
Walentyn Shurskyj died at the age of 87 in his adopted home of Kiev and is buried in the city's Baikowe Cemetery.
