Oleksiy Oleksijowytsch Schowkunenko (born March 9 . Jul / 21st March  1884 greg. In Kherson , Kherson Gubernia , Russian Empire ; † 12. March 1974 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet painter .

Life

Oleksij Schowkunenko was born in Kherson as the son of a roofer. In 1908 he graduated from the art school in Odessa with Kyriak Kostandi and in 1917 he graduated from the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg . Between 1926 and 1935 he taught painting at art institutes in Odessa and from 1935 to 1963 he was a professor at the Kiev Art Institute . Since 1947 he was a full member of the Russian Academy of Arts . Schowkunenko had lived in Kiev since 1935 and died there in 1974 at the age of 89. He was buried in the Baikowe cemetery .

Shovkunenko painted numerous portraits, including many of Ukrainian celebrities such as Ivan Le (1943), Leonid Perwomaiskyj (1943), Maksym Rylskyj (1945), Oleh Bohomolez (1945), Natalija Uschwij (1947), Mykola Lyssenko (1947) and Pavlo Tichyna ( 1949) as well as landscape paintings, urban and industrial landscapes. The Art Museum of the City of Cherson named after him houses one of the largest collections of his works in Ukraine with 155 exhibits. More of his works can be found in the National Art Museum of Ukraine in Kiev.
