Kyriak Kostjantynowytsch Kostandi ( Ukrainian Киріак Костянтинович Костанді / Russian Кириак Константинович Костанди Kiriak Konstantinovich Kostandi ; born September 21, jul. / 3. October  1852 greg. In Nowa Dofiniwka , Kherson Gubernia , Russian Empire ; † 31 October 1921 in Odessa , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian painter of Greek origin.

Life

Kyriak Kostandi was born as the son of a Greek trader or fisherman in the coastal village of Nowa Dofiniwka near Odessa. His father died when Kyriak was 9 years old, so he had to contribute his share of the family's livelihood through work. He later studied with Michail Clodt von Jürgensburg at the Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg until 1882 , where he continued to live until 1884 after completing his studies. Then he moved to Odessa, where he spent the rest of his life. He was a member of the Peredwischniki artist group, which regularly organized traveling exhibitions throughout the Russian Empire. From 1885 he was a lecturer at the Odessa Art School. Kostandi was a founding member of the Association of South Russian Artists and its director between 1902 and 1921. He was also one of the founders of the Odessa Art Museum in 1898/99 and its director until 1917.
