Natalija Mychailiwna Uschwij (* August 27 . Jul / 8. September  1898 greg. In Lyuboml , volhynian governorate , Russian Empire ; † 22. July 1986 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet film and stage actress .

Life

Natalija Uschwij was born in Lyuboml in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast Volyn into a farming family. Between 1915 and 1918 she worked as a village school teacher in Volhynia and the Poltava Governorate .

In 1918 she began acting in an amateur theater company in Cherkassy Oblast and from 1922 she played in various theaters in Ukraine, including Odessa and Kharkiv . In 1926 she played her first film role. From 1936 to the end of her life, Uschwij was an actress at the Ivan Franko Theater in Kiev. Between 1954 and 1971 she headed the Ukrainian theater company. Natalija Uschwij has played more than 200 roles during her long career on the stage.

Her first marriage was to the poet Mychajlo Semenko , who fell victim to the Stalinist terror in 1937 . A son who died in 1951 resulted from the marriage, which was divorced in 1936. In his second marriage Uschwij was married to the Ukrainian actor Yevhen Ponomarenko ( Євген Порфирович Пономаренко , 1909-1994). She died in Kiev and was buried in the Baikowe Cemetery.

Natalija Uschwij received numerous medals and honors. Including:

The Ukrainian Post issued a postage stamp on her 100th birthday in 1998 and the Ukrainian National Bank issued a two hryvnia commemorative coin with her portrait on her 110th birthday in 2008 .
