The National Ivan Franko Drama Theater ( Ukrainian Національний академічний драматичний театр імені Івана Франка / Nazionalnyj akademitschnyj dramatytschnyj teatr imeni Ivana Franka ) is the most popular theater in the Ukrainian capital Kiev . On October 11, 1994, the Ivan Franko Drama Theater was granted national theater status by decree of the President of Ukraine .

The Ivan Franko National Academic Dramatic Theater , as its literally translated official name, is located in Pechersk Raion at No. 3 Ivan Franko Square in the center of Kiev.

history

The originally two-story theater building, built between 1896 and 1898 according to plans by the architects Georg Schleifer and Eduard Bradtman in neo-Greek style, was badly damaged during the Second World War and was restored in 1946. The theater hall was designed in the Baroque and Rococo styles by the architect Władysław Horodecki .

In 1940 the theater was given the honorary title of Academic Theater .

From 1959 to 1960 it was increased to three floors. The opening of the theater took place on January 28, 1920. Since 1926 the theater has been named after the Ukrainian writer and literary critic Iwan Franko .
