Oleksandr Jakowytsch Konyskyj ( Ukrainian Олександр Якович Кониський , Russian Александр Яковлевич Кониский / Alexander Yakovlevich Koniski * August 6 jul. / 18th August  1836 greg. In Perechodiwka , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire , † November 29 jul. / December 12  1900 greg. In Kiev , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian lawyer, journalist, writer and translator.

Life

Oleksandr Konyskyj's literary activity began in 1858. Among other things, he wrote textbooks, poems, novels and theater reviews, wrote essays on Ukrainian history, a Russian-Ukrainian dictionary and a biography of Taras Shevchenko . Konyskyj gained fame as the lyricist of the well-known sacred song Prayer for Ukraine ( Молитва за Україну ). He also translated numerous writings from Russian into Ukrainian. His works were banned in the Soviet Union from the 1920s to the 1980s .

In 1863 he was arrested on suspicion of anti-government affiliation and exiled first to the city of Vologda and later to Totma . In 1866 he returned to Ukraine and lived in Jelisavetgrad , Bobrynez and Yekaterinoslav . In 1872 he moved to Kiev, where he ran a law firm. In 1873 he was a co-founder of the Shevchenko Society in Lviv. He died at the age of 64 in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .
