Moses Engelbert

Moses Engelbert (Mosche Meir ben Naftali) (born June 18, 1830 in Gudensberg near Kassel ; died January 17, 1891 in Heilbronn ) was a rabbi .

Life

Moses Engelbert was the son of the businessman Hermann Engelbert. He received training from Rabbi Markus Wetzlar. He took lessons from the local priest.

In 1837 he came to the yeshiva in Würzburg ( Seligmann Bär Bamberger ), then in Frankfurt am Main. He also pursued private studies in high school subjects. From 1852 to 1855 he studied in Göttingen . In 1855 he received his doctorate in Jena .

From 1855 to 1857 Engelbert was a preacher and religious teacher in Waren ( Mecklenburg-Schwerin ), and in 1857 in Thorn (Province of West Prussia). There he founded a yeshiva. In 1860 he became rabbi in Kolberg (Pomerania), in 1862 district rabbi in Lehrensteinsfeld near Heilbronn. There he was the successor of Ma (r) x Bär Kallmann. In 1867 the rabbinate was moved to Heilbronn. The synagogue was dedicated there in 1877 . In 1878, Moses Engelbert had to resign because of illness. His successor was Dr. Berthold Einstein from Ulm.

Moses Engelbert was married to Emilie, née Hinrichsen (Ester bat Reuwen), from Waren, since 1857. He had a son and a daughter who both died before him.
