Yury Voronyj

Jurij Jurijowytsch Woronyj ( Ukrainian Юрій Юрійович Вороний , Russian Юрий Юрьевич Вороной Yuri Yuryevich Woronoi ; born August 9 . Jul / 21st August  1895 greg. In Schurawka , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 13. May 1961 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet surgeon . He performed the world's first kidney transplant in 1933 .

Life

Jurij Voronyj was born in the village of Shuravka on the Udaj in what is now Varwa Rajon in the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernihiv as the son of Georgi Voronoi, a mathematics professor at the University of Warsaw . From 1913 he studied at the medical faculty of St. Vladimir University in Kiev. During the First World War he was with the Red Cross and after the war he volunteered as a medical student in the group of the troops of the Central Na Rada . On January 16, 1918 he took part in the Battle of Kruty .

He graduated from the Kiev Medical Institute in 1921 and made an aspirantur there as a doctoral student . In 1926 he became a research assistant at the research department of the Kharkov Medical Institute and in 1931 chief physician in Kherson .

On April 3, 1933, at the age of 38, he performed the world's first kidney transplant in the 1st Soviet City Hospital in Kherson . At that time he was 38 years old, had no scientific rank, but had extensive experience in experimental kidney transplants from animals. The patient only survived the procedure for two days.

At the end of 1935 he was made a candidate for medical sciences without defending a thesis, and in November 1936 he became the head of the surgery department of the Kharkov Dental Institute. At the end of 1943 he moved to Zhytomyr and worked there as a doctor in the hospital. From May 1950 he lived in Kiev and worked at the Institute of Experimental Biology and Pathology. Between 1953 and 1961 he was employed at the Kiev Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. He died in 1961 at the age of 66 from chronic coronary disease in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .
