Location of the Udaj (Удай) in the catchment area of the Dnepr |
The Udaj ( Ukrainian Удай ) is a right tributary of the Sula with a length of 327 kilometers. The river, which is part of the Dnepr river system, drains an area of 7,030 km². The source of the Udaj is located in the Chernihiv Oblast in central Ukraine, near the village of Rosnishky. From there it flows in wide arches towards the southeast, where it finally flows into the Sula in the Poltava Oblast about ten kilometers northeast of Lubny . The difference in height between the source (approx. 134 m ) and the mouth ( 87 m ) is just 50 meters. As a result, the river has a very low gradient and a low flow velocity, which means that the banks are partly heavily swamped .
Larger tributaries are: Lyssohir (61 km long, 1,042 km² catchment area), Mnoha (58 km long, 589 km² catchment area) and Perewid (68 km long, 1,042 km² catchment area).
Larger towns on the Udaj are Pryluky and Pyrjatyn .
