Guri Nikolayevich Savin

Guri Nikolaevich Sawin , Russian Гурий Николаевич Савин , English transcription Gury Nikolaevich Savin, (born January 19 . Jul / 1. February  1907 greg. In Vesyegonsk ; † 28. October 1975 in Kiev ) was a Soviet engineers.

Savin was the son of a teacher and studied from 1928 in Dnepropetrovsk at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. Sawin was a student of Alexander Nikolayevich Dinnik . He then took over the chair for structural engineering at the Civil Engineering Institute in Dnepropetrovsk, which he held until 1941. From 1942 to 1945 he was head of the Institute of Rock Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR . He became head of the Lviv Department of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and was dean of the Ivan Franko University until 1952 . From 1952 to 1957 he was director of the Institute of Mathematics (and Vice-President of the Academy) and from 1959 director of the Institute of Mechanics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Kiev.

He dealt with mathematical elasticity theory and rheology (for example also of polymers from the 1960s).

In 1945 he became a corresponding and in 1948 full member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

He founded the journal Prikladna Mekhanika (Applied Mechanics), which has been called International Applied Mechanics since 1992 .

He died in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .
