The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Vinzenz is a church building in Echthausen , a district of Wickede in the Soest district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The parish of St. Antonius of Padua and St. Vinzenz Wickede is part of the pastoral network of Wickede-Ruhr in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

History and architecture

The southern Westphalia , thus also Echthausen, originally belonged to the Archdiocese of Cologne and after 1821 to the Archdiocese of Paderborn. In 1663, the Christians in Echthausen asked Elector Max Heinrich to approve the parish of Menden and to approve the parish to Vosswinkel , since the way to Menden took two hours. Max Heinrich allowed this and Echthausen came to Vosswinkel with all rights and income. A foundation ensured that the pastor of Vosswinkel was supposed to read a mass in Echthausen twelve times a year, with a high mass to be read on the parish fair and patronage day.

It is not known when the first chapel was built in the village. A document from 1719 mentions that their ancestors built a chapel here a long time ago and venerated Saint Vincent as the patron of the church . This old chapel was burned down by soldiers passing through, but it was rebuilt . The chapel burned down in the 18th century, the new chapel was added to the school building, it was 13.93 meters long and 5.52 meters wide, and the schoolhouse was of a similar size. The chapel was accessed through an entrance on the south side, and the school room was accessible through a door in the middle of the building. The parament cabinet stood in a niche in the chapel , the pulpit was on the left in the choir room , the confessional on the right. There were separate benches for the von Schüngel and von Lilien families. The walls were divided by two large and two small windows, and the roof was crowned with a small bell tower.

From 1844 the political community planned to build a new chapel; a school building with an adjoining chapel was requested again. However, this could not be realized and the old buildings deteriorated more and more. Since repairs were out of the question, a Leo club was founded in 1888 to raise money for the new building. Since no agreement could be reached on a building site, the start of construction was delayed until 1894. All necessary permits were issued by December. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in April 1895 and the foundation stone was laid on June 11, 1895. By the end of the year the shell was finished and provided with a permanent roof. After a break in construction until the spring of 1896, all walls were plastered and the tower was completed. The consecration was carried out by Bishop Wilhelm Schneider from Paderborn on July 8, 1904.

Bells

The bells were cast by the Heinrich Humpert bell foundry from Brilon in 1896 . They were the Michaelis bell, the Vincentius bell and the Marien bell with the inscription Sancta Maria, ora pro nobis . During the First World War, the two large bells had to be handed in at the mobilization office. They had a total weight of 673 kg. The community received compensation of 2,346 marks. The Humpert company cast two new bells in December 1921.
