Dniprowa Chaika ( Ukrainian Дніпрова Чайка ; pseudonym of Ljudmyla Wassylewska-Berezina ( Людмила Олексіївна Василевська-Березіна ); born October 20 . Jul / 1. November  1861 greg. In Karlivka , Kherson Gubernia , Russian Empire ; † 13. March 1927 in Hermaniwka , Okrug Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian writer and poet. She wrote numerous short stories, poems and the libretti for the children's operas by Mykola Lysenko .

Life

In 1879 she completed her school education at the private women's high school in Odessa and subsequently studied the Ukrainian language and literature intensively, including the works of Taras Shevchenko . In 1885 she married the Ukrainian writer and activist Feofan Wassylewskyj ( Феофан Олександрович Василевський 1855–1912) and published her first poems under the pseudonym Dniprowa Tschajka ( Ваісточka ) .Пісnя Wistotschka ( Ваісточka ). In 1905 she was arrested for her writings. She died in 1927 at the age of 65 in Hermaniwka near Kiev and was buried in the Baikowe cemetery in Kiev. Collections of her works were published in 1929 and 1931.

Honors

On the occasion of Dniprova's 150th birthday in 2011, the Ukrainian National Bank issued a five hryvnia commemorative coin with her portrait.
