Ostap Wyschnja (* as Павло Михайлович Губенко / Pawlo Mychailowytsch Hubenko October 31 jul. / 12. November 1889 greg. In a hamlet at Hrun , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 28 September 1956 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian writer , humorist and satirist .
Life
Ostap Wyschnja was born on a farm in the hamlet of Chechva ( Чечва ) near the town of Hrun, to which he belongs today, in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Sumy, as the younger brother of the later writer and humorist Vasyl Chechvyansky, into a large farming family. He went to school at his place of residence and then to the military medical assistant school in Kiev and trained as a field shearer until 1907 . He then worked as a medical assistant in the Imperial Russian Army and then in the surgical department of the hospital of the Piwdenno-Sachidna Salisnyzja . In 1917 he began studying at Kiev University, but dropped out again and devoted himself entirely to journalism and writing. In 1918 he was drafted into the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic , captured by the Bolsheviks in 1919 and taken to a prison in Kharkiv until 1921 .
His first publication "Democratic Reforms Denikins" appeared on November 2, 1919 under the pseudonym "P.Hrunsky" in the Kamenetz newspaper "Narodnaja Wolja". In the following years he made a name for himself as a humorist and became a popular writer in the Soviet Union. In 1934 he was arrested for alleged counterrevolutionary activities and terrorism and exiled to a gulag , which is why he was only able to continue his literary career after his unexpected release in 1943. Ostap was rehabilitated in 1955 and died in Kiev in 1956. He was buried in the local Baikowe cemetery .
