Wassyl Kasijan

Wassyl Illitsch Kasijan ( Ukrainian Василь Ілліч Касіян ; born January 1, 1896 in Mykulynzi near Snjatyn , Galicia , Austria-Hungary ; † June 26, 1976 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian graphic artist, art historian and politician.

Life

During the First World War , Wassyl Kasijan served in the Austro-Hungarian army from 1915 to 1918 and was a prisoner of war in Italy for two years. He then studied from 1920 to 1926 at the Prague Academy of Arts . In 1923 he took on the Soviet citizenship and from 1927 he was a professor at the Kiev Art Institute and other art schools. Kasijan had been a member of the CPSU (B) since 1946 . Between 1962 and 1968 he was Chairman of the Board of the Union of Artists of the USSR . He was also a member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts and from 1947 to 1951 and from 1963 to 1975 a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR Vasyl Kasijan died in Kiev at the age of 80 and was buried in the Baikowe Cemetery .

Kasijan mainly created graphics and illustrations. His works dealt with revolution, civil war, peace work and "Blooming Ukraine". He created illustrations for many works of classical literature, including Nikolai Gogol , Ivan Franko , Mychajlo Kozjubynskyj , Wassyl Stefanyk , Pavlo Tychyna and Taras Shevchenko ,
