Nhlanhla Nene

Nhlanhla Musa Nene [ ˈnɬanɬa ˈnɛnɛ ] (born December 5, 1958 in Kranskop ) is a South African politician . He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and was Finance Minister in President Jacob Zuma's second cabinet from November 2014 to May 2015 . He was reappointed to this position by President Cyril Ramaphosa on February 27, 2018 , and removed from office at his own request on October 9, 2018.

Life

Nene grew up near Kranskop in the Natal province . He took his matric at the Gcothoyi Adult Center . He then attended the University of the Western Cape (UWC), from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Honors . He also holds degrees in Marketing Management and Economic Policy . He also attended courses in London and in 2000 at Williams College in the US Williamstown .

Nene got involved in politics during her studies. In 1990 he organized the first strike in the financial sector in South Africa for the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU). In 1999 he was first elected to the National Assembly for the ANC . From then on he was a member of the Portfolio Committee on Finance , which was chaired by Barbara Hogan .

From 2005 to 2008 Nene headed the Portfolio Committee on Finance as Chairperson . Subsequently, President Kgalema Motlanthe appointed him deputy finance minister. In 2010 Nene was part of the organizing committee for the Soccer World Cup in South Africa . On April 25, 2014, President Jacob Zuma entrusted him with the office of finance minister in place of Pravin Gordhan . Nene opposed high government spending, such as the government considering building several nuclear power plants . On December 9, 2015, he was replaced by Daniel van Rooyen, who was inexperienced in financial policy, without giving a reason . As a result, the exchange rate of the Rand and the share index of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange fell significantly within a day, so that Zuma van Rooyen entrusted another cabinet post after four days and Gordhan was again Minister of Finance. A few days after his removal, Nene resigned from his parliamentary mandate. On February 26, 2018, the newly elected President Ramaphosa reappointed him as Minister of Finance in the Ramaphosa I cabinet .

On October 9 of the same year, Ramaphosa accepted his resignation. It had previously become known that, contrary to earlier statements, Nene had met several times with members of the Gupta family between 2010 and 2014 . He was succeeded by the former governor of the South African Reserve Bank , Tito Mboweni . On the same day it became known that the Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane was investigating Nene for paying a company equivalent to US $ 1.7 million to his son.
