Julius Alfons Nikolai Szymanowski (born February 10, 1829 in Riga , † April 25, 1868 in Kiev ) was a surgeon of Polish-German descent and worked in Russia .

Life

Julius Szymanowski came from an in Duchy of Courland and Semigallia based Polish nobility sfamilie which took the German nationality and Lutheran denomination over the generations. He was born as the son of the civil servant Carl Szymanowsky and his wife Helene. Kutzky born.

He attended high school in Reval from 1841 to 1850 . From 1850 to 1856 he studied medicine at the University of Dorpat with Georg von Adelmann and received his doctorate in 1856. While still a student, he was posted to Estonia for military service in 1855 . Back in Dorpat, he became an assistant at the surgical clinic in 1856 and a private lecturer in 1857. In 1858 he was appointed associate professor of surgery at Helsingfors University. On August 27, 1860, he married Adelaide von Rambach, daughter of an artillery colonel. In 1861 he was appointed associate professor and then full professor of war surgery at the University of Kiev .

In 1863 he took part in the suppression of the Polish January uprising as a war surgeon . In 1866 he developed testicular cancer and died in 1868 at the age of 39. He was buried in the Baikowe Cemetery in Kiev .

A collection of his poetry appeared posthumously (under the pseudonym Julius Steinborn).

Importance as a surgeon

Szymanowski invented a resection saw , which he described in detail in his doctoral thesis. He also invented the somatometer, a device for anthropometric measurements.

Julius von Szymanowski mainly dealt with plastic surgery and the treatment of broken bones. His manual of operative surgery is considered to be one of the most important works of its kind in the 19th century. He was particularly successful in the field of rhinoplasty .

Through his active contacts with German colleagues and as a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors , he contributed to publicizing recent medical achievements in the Russian Empire . He revised the handbook Surgical Anatomy of Arterial Trunks and Fascia by Nikolai Ivanovich Pirogow and translated it into German.
