Wilhelm von Wittich

Wilhelm von Wittich (born September 21, 1821 in Königsberg (Prussia) , † November 22, 1884 ibid) was a German physiologist .

origin

His parents were the Prussian major general Karl August von Wittich (1772–1831) and his wife Christiane Johanna Friederike Elisabeth von Redern (1780–1842).

Life

Wittich studied medicine in Königsberg and Halle from 1841 . There doctorate in 1845 for Dr. med. In 1846 he settled in Königsberg as a general practitioner , but also dealt with histological investigations. At the suggestion of Hermann von Helmholtz , he gave up medical work and devoted himself to physiology. Habilitated in 1850 , he became associate professor in 1854 . When Helmholtz was appointed to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in 1855 , Wittich moved to the Königsberg ordinariate . In 1864/65 he was rector of the University of Königsberg. In 1882 he had to give up teaching because of a serious illness.

Wittich was considered one of the most important physiologists of his time. From 1875 he was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
