Jewhen Huzalo

Yevhen Pylypowytsch Huzalo ( Ukrainian Євген Пилипович Гуцало ; born January 14, 1937 in Staryj Schyvotiw , Vinnytsia Oblast , Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic ; † July 4, 1995 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian writer, journalist and screenwriter.

Life

Yevhen Huzalo was born in the village of Staryj Schyvotiw ( Старий Животів ; today Novozhyvotiw , Orativ district ). After an outstanding high school diploma in the early 1950s, he wanted to study at the Faculty of Journalism at the University of Kiev , but was ultimately not accepted. From 1955 he attended the Faculty of Philology of the Pedagogical Institute Nischyn and graduated from there in 1959. He then worked as a journalist for newspapers in Vinnytsia , Lviv and Chernihiv and as editor of the publishing house "Soviet Writers".

His first publication appeared in 1960 and in 1962 he published his first complete book; a collection of short stories “people among people” ( Люди серед людей ). Huzalo was initially a member of the Ukrainian 1960s generation (Schistdesjatnyky) who opposed the Stalinist ideology, but gave up his negative attitude towards the regime and chose a safe life as an official writer. He has authored more than 25 novellas and collections of short stories, including several children's books. Jewhen Huzalo died in Kiev at the age of 58 and was buried in the local Baikowe cemetery . A five-volume edition of selected works by him was published in 1996-97 in Kiev.

Honors

Jewhen Huzalo received several honors and won literary competitions. Including:

  • 1982 the Ukrainian literary prize Jurij Janowskyj ( Літературна премія імені Юрія Яновського )
  • 1985 the Taras Shevchenko Prize , National Prize of Ukraine for Culture, for the novel "Saijora" ( Сайора ) and the collection of short stories "Flying Horses".
