Mykhaylo Hordijowytsch Derehus ( Ukrainian Михайло Гордійович Дерегус ; born November 22, jul. / 5. December  1904 greg. In Wessele , Kharkov Governorate , Russian Empire , † 31 July 1997 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian- Soviet painter, graphic artist, Educator and cultural activist.

Life

Mychajlo Derehus completed his studies at the Charkover Art Institute, which he began in 1923. From 1958 on, Derehus was a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts and between 1956 and 1962 he was chairman of the Union of Artists of Ukraine.

He gained fame as an illustrator of the classics of Ukrainian literature and Soviet historical novels. As a painter has worked in the field of portrait, landscape and genre painting and created complex multi-figure compositions. In his paintings, which are exhibited in the National Art Museum of Ukraine , among others , the nature, history and life of Ukraine are reflected.

From 1995 he was a professor at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kiev. In 1997 he became a full member of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine . He died in 1997 at the age of 92 in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe Cemetery.

Honors

In 1957 Derehus was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR and in 1963 the title of People's Artist of the USSR . In 1960 he received the Order of Lenin and in 1969 with the Taras Shevchenko Prize, the State Prize of the USSR. He was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples in 1974, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1984 and the Ukrainian Order of Merit 3rd Class in 1993. In 2004, on the occasion of his 100th birthday , the Ukrainian National Bank issued a two hryvnia commemorative coin with his likeness.
