Viktor Stepanowytsch Kossenko ( Ukrainian Віктор Степанович Косенко , Russian Виктор Степанович Косенко / Victor Stepanovich Kossenko ; born November 11 . Jul / 23. November  1896 greg. In St. Petersburg , Russian Empire , † 3. October 1938 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) was a Ukrainian composer, teacher and pianist.

He composed over 100 works for piano, including waltzes, preludes, nocturnes, sonatas and mazurkas. His complete works include around 250 pieces of music such as his symphonic Moldavian poem , piano and violin concerts, trios and string quartets, as well as compositions for choir.

Life

Kossenko was born in Saint Petersburg, moved to Warsaw with his parents in 1898 and grew up there. He was taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory by Irina Miklashovskaya, among others. He studied composition with Nikolai Sokolow , who was a student of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov , and graduated in 1918. Since 1918 he taught at the technical center in Zhytomyr in the Ukraine, where he lived from 1919 to 1929. In 1920 he married Angelina Knaepp. In 1932 he became a professor at the Kiev Conservatory . He died in Kiev at the age of 42 and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .

Honors

Kossenko was awarded the Order of the Red Labor Banner . In 1996 the Ukrainian Post issued a postage stamp with his portrait on his 100th birthday.

reception

Kossenko's work is assigned to neoclassicism. His compositions are described as catchy but unpredictable. However, his pieces are also said to have a lack of depth. This is controversial. His piano sonata Op. 14 compared with the works of Scriabin .
