Nikolai Alexandrowitsch Sokolow (composer)

Nikolai Alexandrovich Sokolov ( Russian Николай Александрович Соколов ; born March 14 . Jul / 26. March  1859 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † 27. March 1922 in Petrograd ) was a Russian composer and professor.

Sokolow studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow and Julius Johannsen . From 1886 until the October Revolution he taught at the Petersburg court orchestra and from 1896 also at the conservatory, where he received a professorship in 1908. Among his students were, for example, Dmitri Shostakovich and Ivan Wyschnegradsky .

Among other things, Sokolow composed two ballets based on Hans Christian Andersen , drama music, chamber music (including three string quartets), songs and sacred music. Sokolow was part of the circle around the publisher and patron Beljajew and also contributed compositions to his quartet evenings Les Vendredis . He was also the author of several textbooks on music theory.
