Heorhij Majboroda

Heorhiy Ilarionowytsch Majboroda ( Ukrainian Платон Іларіонович Майборода , Russian Георгий Илларионович Майборода / Georgi Illarionovich Maiboroda * November 18 jul. / 1. December  1913 greg. In Pelechiwschtschyna , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 6. December 1992 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Soviet and Ukrainian classical composer .

Life

Heorhij Majboroda was born on a farm in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Poltava .

In 1941 he completed his studies at the Kiev Conservatory with Levko Rewuzkyj . He took part in the German-Soviet War as a soldier in the Red Army . Between 1952 and 1958 he taught music theory at the Kiev Conservatory. From 1967 to 1968 he was chairman of the Union of Composers of Ukraine and from 1967 to 1980 he was a member of the Verkhovna Rada of the USSR . He died at the age of 79 in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .

Heorhij Majboroda composed the operas "Milan" (1957), "Arsenal" (1960) and "Taras Shevchenko" (1964), all of which premiered at the Taras Shevchenko Opera House in Kiev, and in 1973 the opera "Yaroslav the Wise". He also wrote three symphonies (1940, 1952, 1976), a concerto for voice and orchestra (1969) as well as songs to texts by Volodymyr Sosiura , Teren Massenko ( Терень Масенко ), Adam Mickiewicz , Lesya Ukrainka , Ivan Franko and Pawlo Tychyna .

Honors

In 1960 he received the title of People's Artist of the USSR and in 1963 he was awarded the Taras Shevchenko Prize , after his brother Platon Majboroda , who was also a composer, had been awarded the previous year. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor .
