Memorial cross for the Schleswig-Holstein army

The Memorial Cross for the Schleswig-Holstein Army 1848/49 was donated by the provisional government on July 2, 1850 after the successful battles against Denmark in 1848 and 1849. These crosses were received by the members of the entire Schleswig-Holstein army who took part in the fighting. The crosses were made from the iron of the cannons of the ship of the line Christian VIII . The ship was captured in the battles near Eckernförde on April 5, 1849. Crosses with and without dates were awarded. The crosses without dates are rarer.

The cross is made of blackened iron. The cross arms with raised stepped edges. The front with an embossed round center shield. A round eyelet with a ribbon ring attached to the upper cross arm.

Obverse: On the cross arms on a smooth ground left - 1848 - right - 1849 -. The round center shield with a raised stepped edge. The enclosed field is divided into two by a vertical line. On the left the coat of arms of Schleswig - one on top of the other 2 lions walking to the left. On the right, on a vertically hatched background, the Holstein coat of arms. A small shield in each third surrounded by 3 nails and 3 nettle leaves.
