Pavlo Pawlowytsch Wirskyj (* February 12 . Jul / 25. February  1905 greg. In Odessa , Russian Empire ; † 5. July 1975 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian dancer and choreographer .

Life

Pavlo Wirskyj attended the Music and Drama School in Odessa from 1923 to 1927 and then continued his studies at the Moscow Theater Academy from 1927 to 1928 . From 1928 on he was a ballet dancer, later artistic director at the Odessa Opera House , the Kharkov Opera, the Dnipropetrovsk Opera, the Taras Shevchenko Opera House in Kiev and the Kiev Ballet Theater. Pavlo Wirskyj founded in 1937, together with the choreographer Mykola Bolotow (ukr. Микола Олександрович Болотов , 1904–1955), today's National Academic Dance Ensemble of Ukraine "Pavlo Wirskyj" , of which he was also from 1955 to 1975. At that time the dance group was the state dance ensemble of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Since 1946 he was a member of the CPSU . He lived in Kiev and died there at the age of 70, where he was buried in the Baikowe cemetery .

On the occasion of Pavlo Wirskyj's 100th birthday in 2005, the Ukrainian Post issued a postage stamp and the Ukrainian National Bank issued a two hryvnia commemorative coin with his portrait within the series of outstanding personalities of Ukraine .
