Dobersberg Castle is a four-wing Renaissance castle and is located in the market town of Dobersberg in the Waidhofen an der Thaya district in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria . The castle is used as a municipal office and natural history museum. The building is a listed building .

history

A medieval defense structure first appeared in Dobersberg around 1305. Today's castle can be seen as its successor at the same location and was built by Sigmund von Puchheim around 1520. His heirs had to sell the property to Johann Ambros Brassican in 1588, who bequeathed it to his daughter Anna Sabina, who was married to Christoph Adam Fernberger.

During the Thirty Years' War the castle was sacked by Bohemian troops.

In 1645 the imperial colonel Johann Ernst Freiherr von Montrichier bought the rule from the Fernbergers, in 1673 it passed to Peter Freiherr von Ugate. In 1678 the Herberstein family acquired the castle and estate. At the end of the 18th century, the Herberstein family sold all their possessions in the Waldviertel, including the Dobersberg castle and estate.

A new owner was found in Sebastian Edler von Güldenstein, who, however, leased the property. With Philipp Ferdinand Graf von Grünne , who came into possession of Dobersberg in 1802, the castle finally experienced a boom again. In the years that followed, he had it extensively renovated and laid out a palace garden.

After the death of Philip III. Count von Grünne passed the castle first to his mother and then finally to his nephew Count Friedrich von Szápáry .

In 1945 the castle was badly damaged and was badly affected by the Russian occupation in the following years. For example, the entire classicist furnishings were lost. In 1948 the market town of Dobersberg bought the building and had it renovated from 1972. Today the municipal office and a natural history museum are housed in the premises.

architecture

Dobersberg Castle is a three-story, compact, four-winged building. The outer corners and the west center of the castle are decorated with round towers with a curved conical roof, while the southeast corner has a square tower with an onion roof. Originally this tower had a gallery with a gabled roof, but in the course of the renovation work in 1805 the onion helmet that still exists today was built.
