Friedrich Count Szápáry von Muraszombath, Széchysziget and Szapár (born November 5, 1869 in Budapest , † March 18, 1935 in Vienna ), was an Austro-Hungarian diplomat .

Life

Hedwig von Szapáry, née Princess zu Windisch-Grätz (1878–1918), with her daughter Maria Gabrielle (1913–2007) in Saint Petersburg, 1914.

Friedrich Graf Szápáry was the son of the general of the cavalry László Graf Szápáry (1831-1883) and the Marianne Countess von Grünne (1835-1906; daughter of Karl Ludwig von Grünne ).

He entered the foreign service in 1895, was employed as an attaché in Rome in 1895, in Berlin in 1899 and in Munich in 1903. From October 27, 1907 to October 1, 1913 he worked in Vienna. From December 15, 1909 to April 20, 1912, Szápáry was the office manager of Alois Lexa von Aehrenthal . Leopold Berchtold certified him skill and a quick perception. From April 20, 1912 to October 1, 1913, he headed the Department of Politics in the Foreign Ministry. He criticized the foreign policy of the German Reich along the lines of the reinsurance treaty and advocated an aggressive policy towards the Russian Empire and the Balkan Federation in the Balkan Wars . He saw in this conflict a common hostility to the Balkan League with the Ottoman Empire, which is why he spoke out against the Italian military interventions against the Ottoman Empire .

On October 1, 1913, despite his attitude, Szapáry was appointed ambassador to Saint Petersburg and received on February 14, 1914 by Nicholas II (Russia) to present his credentials . After 14 days he left Saint Petersburg on a family matter. He was in Saint Petersburg from mid-April to late May and from July 17 to mid-August 1914. In his absence Otto Czernin was chargé d' affaires. On July 21, 1914, he met Raymond Poincaré at a reception and held talks with Sergei Dmitrijewitsch Sasonow in the days that followed, culminating in the delivery of the declaration of war on August 6, 1914.

In 1915 he became a member of the Vienna Herrenhaus .

HRH Princess Michael of Kent , born Marie Christine Baroness von Reibnitz, is his granddaughter.
