The Catholic parish church of St. Martin is located in Sontheim in the Unterallgäu district in Bavaria . The church is a listed building.

history

The main structural components of the church date from the second half of the 15th century. In 1762 the interior of the church was redesigned in Baroque style . The nave was lengthened by one yoke to the west in 1883 and another 3.5 meters in 1949.

Building description

The plastered church has a nave with five window axes. This is followed by the drawn-in choir with three axes and 3/8 end. In the choir there is a barrel vault with stitch caps on curved cornice consoles. The nave is covered with a flat ceiling . In the nave there is a surrounding entablature with cornices curved over the windows. In the church on the west side there is a gallery with a curved parapet. The gallery rests on pillars with stucco marble. The church tower has a gable roof and is located in the northern corner of the choir. On the upper floor of the church tower, which is divided into seven floors, there are three-part sound arcades on the east and south sides and two-part sound arcades on the north side . The basement of the church tower has a ribbed vault . In the southern corner of the choir there is a niche extension with a larger-than-life wooden figure of a dungeon Christ from the 18th century.

Most of the church's equipment is modern and dates from after 1951. The chalice-shaped baptismal font from the 19th century is made of marbled wood. The lid is decorated with a group of figures with the baptism of Christ .

The ceiling paintings were created in 1762 by Johann Baptist Enderle. In the choir is a rosary Madonna with St. Dominic and St. Depicted Catherine of Siena . These are depicted in front of a dummy architecture . The representation of the four evangelists in the corner fields is modern. In the frame of the choir there is the coat of arms of Abbot Anselm Erb from the Ottobeuren monastery in two rocaille cartouches as well as a chronostitch . The ceiling painting in the nave shows Christ in glory and the mantle division of St. Martin . The ceiling painting is labeled Joh. Bap. Enderle pinxit . Further representations from the legend of St. Martin are in the four fields on the sides of the main picture. The fields are designed in yellow clay painting.

On the southern facade there are two epitaphs for priests. The sandstone slab dates from 1741, the epitaph from Solnhofen limestone from 1764 .
