Ivan Sydorowytsch Jischakewytsch (born March 6 . Jul / 18th March 1864 greg. In Wyschnopil , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 18th January 1962 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian painter and graphic artist.
Life
Ivan Yishakevich was the first of 12 children to be born to an impoverished farmer and his wife, the daughter of a priest, in the village of Vyschnopil in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Cherkassy . From 1872 an uncle taught him incon painting and from 1879 he attended the icon painting school of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra . From 1881 he attended the Kiev painting school, which was led by Mykola Muraschko , the step-uncle of Oleksandr Muraschko and a close friend of Ilya Repins , and which stood in the tradition of Ukrainian art. In 1883/84 he took part in the restoration of the wall paintings of the Saint Kyrill Church in Kiev and between 1884 and 1888 he studied at the Imperial Art Academy in Saint Petersburg , which he left as a trained art teacher.
From 1889 onwards he worked as a teacher and restorer of churches and historical sites throughout the Russian Empire. In 1907 he returned to Kiev and continued to work as an artist and painter. He created a variety of realistic illustrations of works by Ukrainian writers such as Taras Shevchenko , Ivan Franko , Lesja Ukrajinka , Ivan Kotlyarewskyj and Mychajlo Kozjubynskyj . In 1939 he received the State Prize of the USSR for his illustrations for Taras Shevchenko's collection of poems Kobsar . During the German occupation he lived in Kiev and continued his artistic work. Yishakevich created more than twenty thousand works during his long life. He died at the age of 97 in Kiev, where he was buried in the Baikowe cemetery .

Ivan Yishakevich was married twice. With his first wife, Agrafena Jakowlew, whom he married while studying in Saint Petersburg, he had a son who committed suicide at the age of 16. His second wife, Maria Ivanova, whom he married in Kiev, died in 1940 after falling under a tram. With her he had the son Michael (1909-1975), who was a composer and music editor.
