Hryhorij Porfyrowytsch Kotschur (born November 4 . Jul / 17th November  1908 greg. In Feskiwka , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 15. December 1994 in Irpin , Kiev Oblast , Ukraine ) was a Ukrainian poet , translator , literary critic and polyglot .

Life

Kochur was born into a Ukrainian family in what is now Chernihiv Oblast and studied at the Kiev Institute of People's Education (today's National Taras Shevchenko University of Kiev ). After that he worked as a lecturer in the Pedagogical Institutes of Tiraspol and Vinnytsia . In 1943 he was arrested and exiled to the city of Inta , where he continued to translate. Thanks to new acquaintances from various countries, he learned other languages ​​such as Estonian , Latvian , Armenian and Georgian . In 1953, after his liberation, he returned to the Ukraine and settled in the city of Irpin near Kiev . Kochur was a campaigner of the then leading Ukrainian translator Maksym Rylskyj .

In 1967 he was one of 139 dissidents who signed the 139 protest letter . In 1973 he was expelled from the  National  Union of Writers of Ukraine because he refused to incriminate Yevhen Swerstyuk in court . He was only taken up there again in 1988.

At the age of 82, Kochur had the opportunity to go abroad and attended scientific conferences in the USA ( University of Illinois 1991), the Czech Republic and Poland . He died in 1994 and was buried in the Kiev Baikowe Cemetery .

Kochur was a member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and was awarded the 1995 Taras Shevchenko Prize posthumously  .
